Scheuer attended the Second Moscow International Theater Festival, which was held on September 1-10, 1934. The productions that he photographed included “Intervention” by Lev Slavin at the Vakhtangov Theatre, “200,000” (aka “The Jackpot”) by Sholom Aleichem at the Moscow State Jewish Theater, Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake” at the Bolshoi Theatre, and “The Black Child and the Monkey” at the Moscow Children’s Theater. The slow film of the era presented technical challenges to anyone documenting live performances. Despite these limitations, Scheuer was able to make a series of successful images.
